We’d like to extend a big thank you to the huge team of Labour Party members who joined Rupa and Douglas Alexander, the Shadow Foreign Secretary, to celebrate the launch of Rupa's pledges* and campaign on Sunday 29th March.
The launch party the previous evening coupled with the clocks going forward that morning meant a few of our number were glad of the excellent coffee available at the University of West London in Ealing, where Douglas introduced Labour's 40 days and 40 ways to change Britain campaign.
After the launch event Douglas, Rupa and most of the members hit the campaign trail with a door-knocking session - with an ITV News crew in tow.
I WILL FIGHT TO KEEP OPEN OUR HOSPITALS, INCLUDING THEIR A&Es
I’ve lived here for over 40 years now and I can’t remember a time when so many people talked to me about their fears for our health service and social care in later life. The coalition have closed 2 of our A&Es and want to shut a further 2, despite the waiting times crisis. As your MP I pledge to save them, and Ealing's maternity unit.
I WILL CAMPAIGN FOR THE LONDON LIVING WAGE AND TO CUT EXPLOITATIVE ZERO-HOURS CONTRACTS
I believe workers deserve better than exploitative zero-hours contracts, where hours are not guaranteed, and minimal if any security is offered. As your MP I will work to get extra legal rights, including the ability to demand a contract for regular hours for the people of Ealing Central and Acton and to make this a place where inequality and injustice are challenged head on.
I WILL PROMOTE THE BUILDING OF GENUINELY AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND NEW HOMES FOR FIRST TIME BUYERS
Here in Ealing Central and Acton rent inflation is astronomical, affordable homes are non-existent and first time buyers must commonly work for over twice the national average to save for their first homes. Now more than ever we need action to give renters longer, more secure tenancies and to put a cap on soaring rents. I will also work with the Labour Party to see that we address this housing crisis, by building more genuinely affordable homes.
I WILL URGE EMPLOYERS AND EDUCATORS TO INCREASE JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR EALING'S SCHOOL LEAVERS AND GRADUATES
Young people in Ealing are currently facing £44k of debt at university and the impact of declining numbers of apprenticeships. Yet small businesses are the economic lifeblood of the town centres and high-streets here in Ealing Central and Acton. So I believe we can bring local business together with Ealing's school leavers and graduates and work to benefit both parties.
I WILL STAND WITH CAMPAIGNERS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, FOR HUMAN RIGHTS , EQUALITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
I have campaigned against fracking, the Iraq War, bombing Syria and the closure of our local A&Es and maternity unit. As your MP I will fight for hard working families and individuals over oligarchs and the elite. I stand for justice and equality for all and will take on the concerns of the community of which I feel intrinsically a part.
