Rupa Huq MP has been praised by the Prime Minister in PMQs as he claims to have been converted to feminism.
The Prime Minister has praised local MP Rupa Huq during the latest session of Prime Minister's Questions - while declaring he is a feminist.
The admission from the Prime Minister that he is a feminist came as a surprise to Rupa Huq MP. Rupa said ”I was glad that the Prime Minister declared that he was a feminist but it's a pity the policies of his Government aren't. While the cuts he's imposing impact everybody they are hitting women hardest. Women and children first seems to be the Government's policy on austerity.”
The Prime Minister said “If feminism means that we should treat people equally, yes, absolutely. I am proud that women make up a third of the people I have sitting around the Cabinet table, which we promised and we delivered.”
Rupa Huq MP responded ”I'm worried about the Prime Minister if he thinks only one in three women around the cabinet table is treating women equally. In comparison Labour's shadow cabinet is gender balanced with 50% representation of women. That's a huge achievement that hasn't happened before.”
Rupa was raising the case of a local constituent Jessy McCabe who is campaigning for women composers to be included in the music syllabus. In response the Prime Minister said in the House of Commons chamber that the e-petition “sounds thoroughly worthwhile. Her constituent and her have done a good job. ”
