Acton resident and provocative right wing commentator Toby Young has resigned from his the board of the new university regulator following yesterday’s debate in Parliament which scrutinised his recent appointment.
Mr Young’s suitability for the role had been in question ever since his appointment early in the New Year and MPs from across the house took the opportunity to take aim at his history of controversial comments.
Minister for Universities and Science, Jo Johnson attempted to rebuff many of the criticisms of Toby Young by claiming that many of the homophobic and misogynistic quotes attributed to Mr Young were in the past and that “Mr Young has been on something of a developmental journey”.
MP for Ealing Central and Acton Rupa Huq poured scorn on Mr Young’s ‘developmental journey’ by citing his Spectator column on December 9th 2017. Dr Huq told Parliament
“I am usually the first to congratulate my constituents on their achievements, but even Toby Young’s Acton address cannot save him on this one. In his column in the Spectator on December on the 9th of December, not historical, but mere days before his appointment he boasted… “What a Big Swinging Dick I am”. The column was titled ‘The Subtle art of showing off at work’. How does that and the fact that his West London Free School has had five teachers in almost as many years make him qualified for this post?”
Toby Young resigned this morning claiming that his appointment to the Office for Students has “become a distraction from its vital work”.
