Rupa was amongst panellists at the Save Our NHS Public Meeting at Ealing Town Hall on Tuesday 13th February. Discussions on the night included the proposed closure to Ealing A&E and the depleting number of beds in Ealing and Charing Cross Hospitals.

The packed hall was chaired by Eve Turner, Secretary of Ealing save Our NHS. Also amongst the panellists included: John Lister, Secretary of Keep Our NHS Public; Dr Gurjinder Sandhu, Hospital Consultant and Dr Aislinn Macklin-Doherty, Junior Doctor.

Rupa spoke on her own experiences of receiving NHS care: “I am an end user of these NHS services both as a parent and as someone who’s lost both of my parents in Ealing Hospital. I remember Ealing Hospital going up in 1979, there was such a lot of optimism attached to it. London is heading to a population of ten million. This government is hell-bent on its own ideology; if you look at Andrew Lansley Health and Social Care Act, in some ways the NHS has ceased to exist the way it was envisaged because it’s become ‘just another provider’, not even the preferred provider anymore”.

She concluded by referring to Nye Bevan saying: “We’re very lucky to have Labour councils in Ealing, Hammersmith and Fulham who wouldn’t sign up to the STP (Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships) so that’s very courageous of our leaders to do that. Nye Bevan said the NHS will exist as long as there are folk to fight to keep it. The fact this campaign started in 2013 and we still have A&E in Ealing and Charing Cross is because of the success of this campaign so let’s do this”.
